OK, so I admit it, I’ve been feeling very pro-woman lately. And I found this latest promotion for Under Armour Women to be all kinds of female empowering awesome.
So I got to thinking about some of my favorite heroines in my reading of the last couple of years, and there’s just so many. Rachel Morgan of Kim Harrison’s Hollows series, how she rocks my little reading world. Kate Daniels of Ilona Andrews making. Raine Benares from Lisa Shearin. Elena Deveraux from Nalini Singh. October “Toby” Daye from Seanan McGuire. The latest one of my fave heroines – Catherine Hassi Barahal from Kate Elliott’s Cold Magic. SO many more!
Thank you, authors, for writing strong, capable and passionate women in your books.
Who are some of your most favorite female fictional characters? Which authorial creations rock your little reading world?

Wen Spencer’s Tinker.

Ripley from Aliens, of course.
Tanya Huff’s Torin Kerr, from her Valor series.

Ripley! Yes! Movie, but still, totally kick-ass. :D
I’ve got a Bujold in the TBR somewhere. Soon! Will check out your other recs.
I LOVE Kristen Cashore’s heroines. They’re YA but I LOVE Katsa from Graceling and Fire from…Fire. :)
Good call! I wasn’t as gone over the books themselves, and I had a few issues with the characters, but I agree they both had their strong characteristics as well.
Oh I loved Fire from FIRE too (and Kate Daniels and Toby Daye). I also love Mel from CROWN DUEL, Harry from THE BLUE SWORD, Sorcha from DAUGHTER OF THE FOREST, Cordelia from CORDELIA’S HONOR, and Mercy from all the Mercy Thompson books. There’s more but this is from the top of my head. :D
I think I have Daughter of the Forest in my TBR. And The Blue Sword! I remember Blue Sword from my childhood, so I bought it recently, but I’m not sure if I read it as a kid or it was just everywhere at the time.
I adore Hermione from the Harry Potter books. It was so great to see a “smart girl / bookworm” get some respect for once. She’s such an amazing role model for teenage girls, unlike certain other YA heroines who shall remain mostly nameless **cough cough Bella cough cough**
Holy smokes, I so love that ad. So love.
Mercy Thompson, Kate Daniels, Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games), Elena Devereaux from Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series…
Oooo, that’s a tough one. Thankfully you aren’t asking about a favorite favorite. That would be too hard.
Andrea Cort from the Andrea Cort books by Adam Troy Castro.
Susan Sto Helit from the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett.
Elena from Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld.
Theodora from Doris Egan’s Ivory books.
Yelena from the Study books by Maria V. Snyder.
Note: Yesterday I would have included Gail Carriger’s Alexia on this list, but I just finished Blameless and let’s just say she has lost her snarky edge. Very disappointing.
Sirantha Jax.
Eve Dallas (was there any doubt she’d be there?) and the stalwart Delia Peabody.
Harriet Vane.
There are more but my brain is not quite working right now…
I second Rachel Morgan, Kate Daniels and Elena Deveraux, but I’d like to squeeze Sara from the Guild Hunters in there, too.
Jaenelle and Surreal from The Black Jewels Trilogy, without a doubt.
Keris Kaylen from Havenstar.
Mac from Moning’s Fever Series (and also Danni; love her).
Dante Valentine, Elena Michaels, Eugenie Markham and plenty of others.
