Truly successful science fiction does two things: it gives credible glimpses into the future while entertaining the reader. With this in mind, noted anthologist Jonathan Strahan—who is also the reviews editor of Locus magazine—asked sixteen of today’s most inventive, compelling writers to look past the horizon of the present day. Neil Gaiman (Anansi Boys), Kelly Link (Magic for Beginners), Garth Nix (the Abhorsen Trilogy), Scott Westerfeld (Uglies; Pretties; Specials) and their colleagues have crafted a dazzling range of stories. Whether on spaceships, in suburbia, or in simulated gaming worlds, whether about cloning, battle tactics, or corporate politics, the stories of The Starry Rift will give every reader something to consider. This original anthology is crucial reading for those who want to see where the future—and the future of science fiction—is headed.
The hardcover was already released back in April 2008, but the paperback releases July 30, 2009. Plus, it sounded too interesting not to include here. SciFi YA stories? How cool is that?

Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, housed in a Gothic mansion on the bleak northern moors, is elite, expensive, and unwelcoming. When Evie Johnson is torn away from her home by the sea to become the newest scholarship student, she is more isolated than she could have dreamed. Strict teachers, snobbish students, and the oppressive atmosphere of Wyldcliffe leave Evie drowning in loneliness.
Evie’s only lifeline is Sebastian, a rebellious, mocking, dangerously attractive young man she meets by chance. As Evie’s feelings for Sebastian grow with each secret meeting, she starts to fear that he is hiding something about his past. And she is haunted by glimpses of a strange, ghostly girl—a girl who is so eerily like Evie, she could be a sister. Evie is slowly drawn into a tangled web of past and present that she cannot control. And as the extraordinary, elemental forces of Wyldcliffe rise up like the mighty sea, Evie is faced with an astounding truth about Sebastian, and her own incredible fate.
Releases August 4, 2009. Gillian Shield’s Harper Teen website.

This is a two-volume collection, reprint editions, of Pike’s classic Last Vampire series, just like L.J. Smith’s YA vamp and other paranormal novels are being reissued. The original print edition of book 1, The Last Vampire, simply has the following description:
Suspecting the detective she killed in self-defense is stalking her, a vampire becomes a high-school student to befriend the detective’s son, with whom she falls in love.
But this is a cover spotlight and man are those some striking, gorgeous covers. Thirst No. 1 releases August 4, 2009 and Thirst No. 2 releases January 5, 2010. I’m finding the revamping/reissuing of some of my YA era’s most talked about and read authors to be very cool.

Asking for the truth can be as painful as telling it. . . .
Anselm Andros has clearly defined roles in his family and they are roles he plays very well—he is confidante to his mother, Maria. He is the confessor to his stepfather, Leo, a man haunted by the secrets of his past. And Anselm is also the patient, caring brother to his precocious sister, Jasmine. When the political landscape of Malonia starts to shift, this unassuming family begins to unravel. Even though they’ve spent the past fifteen years leading a quiet life, Maria and Leo’s actions are forever linked to the turbulent history of Malonia and its parallel world, modern-day England. With so much uncertainty at home and in his world, it is more important than ever for Anselm to put all the pieces of the past together. He must listen to his own voice and acknowledge his fears and desires—whatever the cost.
This is the second in Banner’s Last Descendants series, a young first-time author at 19. Has anyone read the first book, The Eyes of a King? Voices in the Dark releases on September 22, 2009.

Marrone has written two other YA novels, Uninvited and Revealers (the latter of which I have in the TBR pile), but I’m not clear on whether any of these three are related or not. Either way, Devoured sounds pretty good. And what is it with ladies dressing so nicely while the guys show up in jeans?
Devoured releases on September 22, 2009.
