Passing of a Star Trek Legend

I discovered via Twitter this morning that Majel Barrett Roddenberry has passed away. You can read the obituary here, which gives a very nice summary of her life’s work, a life that saw her very involved with the makings of Star Trek through the years, not only as the show creator’s wife, but as a creative influence as well.

For those not familiar, she played the nurse aboard the original Enterprise and served with Captain James T. Kirk. I loved that show. As a pre-teen I spent many an after school day soaking up as much Star Trek as I could. And then she played the vivacious, unapologetic and hilarious Lwaxana Troi, mother to the character Deanna Troi in the series Star Trek: The Next Generation. I still chuckle over how she flustered Captain Picard.

Her last Star Trek role was that of the ship’s computer generated voice in the upcoming J.J. Abrams Enterprise. She will be missed.

  1. Aw, I loved Majel in all the roles she played. She was strong and humorous and vivacious.

I once had the very brief privilege of meeting her, at a Star Trek con years and years ago, when she and Gene were presenting prizes for the fancy dress contest. My buddy and I won a special judges’ award for our zombie outfits, and we got to shake hands with and exchange a few words with the Roddenberrys.

It was an awesome moment in my life! :)

  2. This is very sad news. She was great! I was just thinking yesterday how important Star Trek was to me in a lot of ways, and I know she was really important to the show.

  3. Oh goodness KMont, I loved her in Star Trek! I’m such a fan of that series (the original one); I’ve seen the episodes innumerable times. Sad news :(

  4. Lwaxana Troi was always one of my favorite Star Trek characters, out of all the various series. That’s so sad that she’s passed away.
